Dr. Pete Avara is a Board-Certified General Surgeon, President of the Mississippi Coastal Trauma Region, Director of Trauma Services at Singing River Hospital and Chairman of the Mississippi Department of the Health Trauma Advisory Board. He is
a graduate of the University of Mississippi
School of Medicine, and he completed
his residency in General Surgery at the
University Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida.
Dr. Avara has received specialized training
in the surgical treatment of obesity that
includes completing a mini-fellowship in
Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery. He is
credentialed to perform Bariatric Surgery
with the Adjustable Gastric Banding, Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass and the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (Gastric Sleeve) Procedures.
Dr. Avara has practiced General Surgery in his community since 1987 and has performed over 3,000 Bariatric procedures. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Eastern Association for Surgery of Trauma, and the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). As a top Bariatric Surgeon in the Mississippi Gulf Coast area, Dr. William Avara is involved in
all aspects of our bariatric program and patient care. This attention to detail, just as much as his superb training, has allowed him to compile an excellent reputation and record of success.

Dr. Bailey is a Board Certified General Surgeon. He Joined South Mississippi Surgeons in 1996. After attending Rhodes College
on a Cambridge
Scholarship and
graduating from
the University of
Alabama School
of Medicine he
performed his
internship and
residency in general surgery at the University of Alabama Medical Center. Dr. Bailey serves as Director of the Singing River Hospital Vascular Lab. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and was named Young Surgeon of the Year in 2000 by the MS Chapter of the American College of Surgeons.
He is certified in Breast Ultrasound and Stereotactic Breast Procedures by the American Society of Breast Surgeons, and serves as Medical Director of South Mississippi Breast Center.
