Every year, thousands of animals along the Gulf Coast get a second chance at life thanks to the Humane Society of South Mississippi (HSSM). Founded in 1952, the organization has grown into one of the state’s largest animal shelters, caring for more than 7,000 pets each year and serving as the region’s leading voice for animal welfare.
At HSSM, giving back takes many forms. Programs like Love Train transport animals to northern shelters for adoption, while Assisted Loving pairs senior pets with senior citizens, providing lifelong veterinary care. Club Paws camp sessions and T.A.I.L.S. presentations inspire young animal advocates, and the Pet Retention & Community Pet Food Pantry helps families keep beloved pets at home during hard times.
Supporters can also leave a legacy through memorial gifts, donor-advised funds, or estate planning—ensuring compassion continues for generations to come. Each initiative reflects HSSM’s mission to end pet overpopulation, strengthen the human-animal bond, and create a more humane Coast.
This giving season, the Humane Society reminds us that every act of kindness—every adoption, donation, or shared story—can change a life.
