Karen Crews, DMD, has known she wanted to be a dentist since age 13 when her hometown dentist told her she would be a good dentist. “I love everything about dentistry,” she says. “A healthy, beautiful smile is great for positive self-esteem and working with my patients to achieve that goal is so fulfilling.”
She spent the first 25 years of her career at the University
of Mississippi School of Dentistry and upon retirement was appointed professor emeritus. While at the school, she designed and implemented the first Oral Head and Neck Cancer Clinic in the Center’s Cancer Institute.
“I participate in an American Dental Association program called Donated Dental Services and have volunteered in the past with the American Cancer Society,” Dr. Crews says. “Our practice has been involved with the national Oral Head and Neck Cancer Association’s annual free oral cancer screening event as well as participating in local community health fairs.”
Dr. Crews advises young women to “decide where your talent is, then go for it!”
She has been married to her husband Bill for 35 years. “Together we have raised two great sons and have four beautiful grandchildren with one on the way!” she says. “We moved to Gulfport in 2014 and love everything about it. We found our dog, Redd, on I-10 the year we moved here and now he is the only “child” at home.”
Loggan Malone Weihe, DMD, was always interested in the sciences in school and knew from early on that she wanted to pursue some form of medicine. “Dentistry has allowed me to serve our community, establish long term relationships with my patients, and has provided a wonderful work-life balance,” she says.
This year the clinic is involved in the treatment of sleep apnea through oral sleep appliances at their office. “It has been extremely rewarding for us and life-changing for our patients,” she says.
Dr. Weihe is a certified Jackson County Master Gardener whose favorite hobby is gardening. She can often be found enjoying local beaches with her nephews or husband, trying new restaurants and all things outdoors such as hiking, kayaking, pickleball, and learning to kite surf.
