Jackie Roy and Laurie McKay, owners of Coastal Coverings & Furnishings, are both originally from Lafayette, Louisiana, but didn’t
meet until they were living in Pass Christian.
“As our mutual love for the Gulf Coast grew, so did our friendship,” Roy said. “We realized we both have
a passion for creating beautiful home décor. While trying to look for new design elements and decorating our homes, we realized the need for a business such as ours. Neither of
us was ready for retirement so we decided to take our passion and turn it into a business.”
The doors of their new venture opened in January of 2018. “Since opening, we have had the pleasure of meeting so many wonderful people and are grateful to the community that embraces and supports its local businesses,” McKay said.
Their business grew through word of mouth, but the owners knew that wasn’t enough to sustain and grow
a healthy business. When Suzette Carlson walked into their shop and talked to them about advertising in South Mississippi Living magazine, the ladies decided social media and their
website weren’t as successful as they had hoped. They decided to give print advertising a try.
“Well what a difference that one monthly advertisement made! It’s amazing how much advertising in this magazine helped our business,” Roy and McKay say. “We make sure our
ad is placed every month and Suzette makes sure it’s current.”
They didn’t realize how diverse the surrounding communities are until they encountered people from all over the United States looking for that perfect place on the Coast. They now have customers from Missouri, Texas, Louisiana and Illinois.
“Leigh Ann Herman from Chicago contacted us to help redesign and decorate her family’s summer home. In her absence she trusted us to
select all the finishes, from new bathroom tiles, lighting and plumbing fixtures, furniture, rugs and window treatments,” Roy said. “She said, ‘you know I love beautiful things and I believe you have my vision.’ It does help when customers have great taste as our clients do. We just help them with the resources to bring their vision to fruition!”
