LIGHT THE NIGHT
TO BE SEPTEMBER 21
story by Kelsey Sunderman-Foster
The Mississippi-Louisiana Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) will host Light the Night, a fundraising walk, on September 21 at Jones Park.
Light the Night funds treatments that are saving the lives of patients and making cures happen by providing patient support services, advocating for lifesaving treatments and pioneering the most promising cancer research anywhere. Each year friends, families and coworkers form teams to raise funds.
“This is the first year we’re hosting the event on the Gulf Coast,” said Darby Berthelot, campaign director for Light the Night. “Our goal is for the Gulf Coast Light The Night to become an annual event. The campaign is a national campaign with 160 walks, and last year we had more than 1,000,000 participants who raised over $63 million.”
In 2016, the Mississippi-Louisiana Chapter Light the Night Campaign raised nearly $620,000 and
hosted over 3,000 people in the cities of Jackson, Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

he St. Patrick Foundation will host its gala, the Foundation Celebration, on September 16 from 7-11 p.m. at St. Patrick Catholic High School. The event will serve as a kickoff for homecoming week as well as
introduce the Foundation and the good work it has accomplished thus far.
“The Foundation Celebration is free to attend and
is open to all families of the school and supporting parishes, as well as those who wish to support Catholic education,” said Maureen Holland, vice president of the St. Patrick Foundation. “The event will include a band and we will be able to accept donations and pledges at that time.”
“Our current goal is to help the school in three main areas: supporting the tuition assistance program, increasing teacher compensation to help attract and keep the highest quality faculty and maintaining and improving the facilities,” she added.
The Foundation has already made great strides toward its tuition assistance program and is providing free bus transportation to the school, which began with the 2017- 2018 school year.
