VERDANT
Beautiful garden and updated interior bring new life to 1904 cottage
Visitors to the Bay St. Louis home of Janice
Guido and Lizette Ecuyer enter the verdant property through a whimsical arched gate that carries the admonition ‘please close the gate.’ That’s because three adorable Dachshunds, Maggie, Lucy and Bebe, share the home and garden with the homeowners.
The original cottage was built of cypress in 1904 with only 860 square feet. The ladies purchased it after losing a home on the Jourdan River in Hurricane Katrina. An addition doubled the square feet, plus a detached guest cottage/ office suite — sketched on a napkin by Guido — was added at the back of the property.
“I took one look at this place and said ‘we’ve got to buy it,’” Guido recalls. “It was meant to be because it has the same street name and house number of the house we had in New Orleans.” >>
