The house has a rustic — yet elegant — vibe inside and out. The natural color of the logs and the metal roof set the rustic tone. The facade has
a pleasing appeal; the kind that invites sitting for contemplation
or a lively chat with a cool drink
in hand. A grapevine arch with blooming Confederate Jasmine and twinkle lights over the front steps
is the perfect welcoming touch. The original front door has been left intact although there has been some talk of painting it. Bocce balls, badminton rackets, a croquet set and other leisure equipment hint that more active pursuits are possible. There are plans to carve owls — appropriately — in the dead cedar tree that rises through the porch. An outdoor kitchen on the back section of the porch assists with entertaining and a fire pit in the back yard adds to the fun.
The ladies say Owl Lodge reminds them of Karen Blixen’s house in the movie Out of Africa and visitors agree. “It’s not Africa, but we see all kinds of wildlife around here,” Fulcher
said. A fence keeps wildlife out of the backyard garden.
Fulcher’s family has owned Owl Lodge a year and a half with herself and Collom in charge of renovations and redecorating. They say it’s a
work in progress. They redid the floors, putting in engineered bamboo flooring, and opened up the living- kitchen-dining area. They added a pass-through bar from the dining room to the living room. The unusual walls of the dining room feature high white wainscoting with the upper walls painted brown. >>
THIS CRAZY, COOL rustic retreat, lovingly named Owl Lodge, sits in Waveland among a glade of majestic Live Oaks dripping with Spanish moss. From the moment you see the grapevine arch, full of Jasmine and twinkle lights, you’ll feel at home.
