On Saturday, March 2, the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi (DFM) hosted their annual Gulf Coast Walk for Diabetes at Jones Park in Gulfport. This event was for anyone and everyone of all ages looking to support those in Mississippi living with type 1 or type
2 diabetes. The event included a three-mile walk, food, and good company as people came together to support the work of the DFM.
The DFM is the only diabetes organization in Mississippi that keeps your donations local to help your fellow Mississippians. Through the support of those in the Gulfport area, the DFM was able to raise money to provide tangible, vital resources for those living with diabetes in Mississippi.
Support from events like the Walk for Diabetes funds programs such as We Care 2, which supplies newly diagnosed children with backpacks full of information and “happies” to help them adjust to their new life change. Additionally, the Patient Assistance program supplies medication and information to those in need.
The DFM also provides educational opportunities to caregivers, educators, medical professionals, and those living with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. This
is accomplished through the Diabetes On Call (D.O.C.) and Sweet Subject programs, as well as the Continuing Medical Education (CME) and the Super Conference Patient Meeting.
Every dollar raised through the Gulf Coast walk as well as through other DFM fundraising walks all throughout Mississippi allow these programs to continue and flourish. If you or someone you love has been affected by diabetes, you will want to participate in these life changing walks!
