There’s something nostalgic about Georgia’s Corner Market, and it’s not just the building. Located in the original Vancleave Grocery Store, this hidden gem and its top-notch eats won’t be hidden for long.
Owner Laura Pylate and her
daughter, Georgia, after whom Georgia’s Corner Market is named, are serving up their takes on familiar classics. Each day, the restaurant receives calls inquiring about the daily special – the most sought-after being the NOLA BBQ shrimp and grits. When my friend Jenn and I walked in, we were lucky enough to see this highly
requested dish scrawled across the chalkboard.
I can definitively say that this special is truly that – special. Growing up in South Mississippi, you could say I’ve had shrimp and grits a time or two, but these were some of the best I’ve tried. Laura’s famous dish starts with a base of Grit Girl Grits, made right here
in Mississippi, and is piled high with blackened shrimp. The sauce, a version of New Orleans BBQ with rosemary, thyme and Tabasco, adds the final touch.
