The Dr. N. Joyce Payne Center for Social Justice (Payne Center) completed a historic year in 2023:
• In commemoration of the 60th anniversary of
the historic March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, the Payne Center released the premiere report of Black Thriving in America: 2023.
Black Thriving in America: 2023 is the inaugural report of the Payne Center – an independent think tank and policy center created by TMCF. The Payne Center is devoted to research that leads
to pragmatic and innovative ideas on how to address the intractable problem of social justice facing society, especially for Black Americans. The center’s mission is to inform public policy and to highlight research from and about HBCUs and the life experiences of Black Americans.
Black Thriving in America: 2023 is the first annual report in a 100-year commitment between the Payne Center and Gallup to study Black American suffering, struggling and thriving. The Payne Center’s second annual convening coincided with the release of the report.
• CBRE sponsored a certificate in equity and urban development through a free online webinar series for HBCU students, HBCU faculty and CBRE professionals. Seminar participants developed skills and knowledge to help build stronger, more inclusive and more resilient urban communities in a variety of professional arenas. Each seminar was led by a distinguished academic faculty member and/or a leading industry professional.
• In a joint initiative with TMCF government relations, the Payne Center published a white paper on financial equity for 1890s institutions.
The publication
released new federal
data on the historical
funding gap between
HBCUs and PWIs to
help advocate for better
resource equity between land-grant institutions.
• Using approved resources from the US Novartis Foundation and Blue Meridian Foundation,
the Payne Center convened 53 HBCU faculty, administrators and government agencies and exposed them to training topics such as framing and maintaining a research agenda; grants, training and research opportunities at the Department of Education; the W.I.S.E. Model for conducting industry-sponsored research; and intentional engagement to advance institutional STEM education and research.
• As a follow-up to Novartis’s initial partnership with TMCF and its Beacon of Hope initiative, the Payne Center convened the 26 HBCU institutional partners, focusing on biopharma, medicine and health to address disparities in marginalized communities. HBCU presidents, invited students and faculty, along with Beacon of Hope invitees, were able to hear from Norvartis CEO Vas Narasimhan, Novartis US President Victor Bulto and a host of panelists from industry, medical schools and the National Science Foundation.
