No trip to Ocean Springs is complete without visiting Realizations, the
shop that showcases the art of Walter Anderson. Established in 1985
in the town’s old railroad depot, it makes the renowned artist’s works
available to people from far and wide.
“The shop is very consistent with Walter Anderson’s objective,” says
John Anderson, youngest of the Anderson children and executive
director of Realizations. “When something new entered Daddy’s reality,
he called it a realization.”
Ocean Springs Chamber of Commerce CEO and President Cynthia
Sutton notes the importance of art and the Anderson family to the
town. “Art is important to Ocean Springs because it is part of who we
are. It has shaped our community not only culturally, but economically,
bringing visitors, inspiring growth, supporting artists and businesses,
and helping define the character of our town,” she said. “The Anderson
family played a tremendous role in establishing Ocean Springs as an
arts community. What began as an art colony grew into something
much larger, inspiring generations of artists and creating a foundation
for the creative community we know today.”
At Realizations there are many products that carry the artist’s images
including silk-screened prints, clothing, note cards and textiles. Shop
employee Kay Benton says t-shirts
and sweat shirts are very popular.
“We’re always getting new
items and we have the Christmas
ornaments that are sold only at
the Peter Anderson Festival,” she
added.
“Realizations has become
an artistic nexus,” says
John Anderson. “It attracts
extraordinary people. Our
employees are over qualified. I
think the reason they work here
is to meet these extraordinary
people.”
With Anderson art at its core,
Sutton says art is in the town’s
heritage and future. “You can
feel it in the artists who live and
work here, in the businesses that
support and showcase their work,
and in the visitors who come
to Ocean Springs specifically
to experience its creativity. It
is woven into the fabric of this
community. Art doesn’t simply
live in Ocean Springs—it breathes
here,” she said.

of Art
The Walter Anderson Museum of Art (WAMA) inspires
discovery, imagination, and community-building on the
Gulf Coast and beyond through programs, exhibitions,
and outreach; and embodies Walter Anderson’s vision for
societies in harmony with their environments.
WAMA’s collection is comprised of more than a thousand
objects owned by the museum and another thousand on
long-term loan from the family. In addition to showcasing
the work of the Anderson family, WAMA displays art by
visiting artists, chosen for exhibition based upon their
connection with Walter Anderson’s art or philosophies.
In partnership with the City of Ocean Springs, Mississippi
Legislature, the Ocean Springs Chamber of Commerce–
Main Street–Tourism Bureau, and Jackson County Chamber
of Commerce, WAMA recently dedicated two gateway
sculptures at the bottom of the Biloxi Bay Bridge—a Walter
Anderson pelican and the iconic Shearwater Pottery bird.
