story by Kelsey Sunderman-Foster A Guide to Seasonal Color Analysis
Seasonal color analysis is a useful tool that can help individuals discover the colors that best complement their natural features. Originating from the principles of art and
color theory, this method categorizes people into seasonal palettes—Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter—based on their skin tone, hair color, and eye color. While there are subcategories within these four seasons depending on the system you use, understanding the basics of your seasonal palette can elevate your style effortlessly.
Before determining your season, start with your undertone. Undertone is the subtle hue beneath the surface of your skin and typically falls into three categories: warm, cool, or neutral. A few simple tricks can help you identify yours:
• Vein test: Look at the veins on the inside of your wrist in natural light. If they appear green, you likely have warm undertones. If they look blue or purple, you’re likely cool. If it’s hard to tell, you may be neutral.
• Jewelry test: Gold jewelry tends to flatter warm undertones, while silver complements cool tones. If you can wear both easily, you may be neutral.
• White test: Hold pure white and cream fabric near your face. If cream looks better, you’re probably warm. If bright white is more flattering, you’re likely cool.
It’s important to test in natural light and avoid makeup when analyzing your coloring.
