With a passion for homemade cakes and desserts, it’s a natural for Sue Nguyen- Torjusen to own Le Bakery in Biloxi where her baked goods are customer pleasing.
“I grew up with immigrant parents and family who wanted to recreate these desserts that I make,” she says. “I love being able to bring happiness to events such as birthdays and weddings by making something special to celebrate.”
Being named one of Southern Living’s food Legends of the South was an outstanding success for her. “Also, having an exhibit featuring me being honored in the Mississippi Arts and Entertainment Museum in Meridian is something I will never forget,” she says.
Hurricane Katrina had a profound impact on her life and career, as it did for many Coast residents. “After Katrina I thought ‘we either sink or swim,’” she says. “I’m not sinking!”
She advises young women entrepreneurs
to remember their ‘whys.’ “Remember why you love it, why you want it, why you do it and that you have the power to create something good. Know that you have the ability to inspire others.”
Le Bakery’s owner also says it’s important to support other woman-owned businesses because it creates positivity and a sisterhood network that builds, not tears down.
“I enjoy eating in our many great restaurants and I love our Coast life; the water and everything about it,” she says.
