Sometimes a
taste or even a smell
can turn a moment into a
time machine, taking you right
back to your childhood as though you’re there again. I think it’s that ability that makes cooking such an
art – there’s a depth to it that some people don’t realize. In the South though, we’re pretty passionate about our food and I’m sure you all know those memory-inducing foods I’m talking about. It might be your mom’s favorite recipe, or a Gulf Coast classic that’s been adored for generations. One thing’s for sure though, there’s something magical about these homey favorites that have been curated by local culinary
legends.

Submitted by Jennifer Mayfield-Echols, owner of Sugar Tribe Sweets
Ingredients
1⁄2 stick unsalted butter 1 cup brown sugar
1 cup granulated sugar 1 cup cream
1 cup pecans
1/8 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. vanilla
Directions
Melt butter in thick pot, take off burner. Mix sugars and cream. Place back on medium heat, set timer for 10 minutes, stirring consistently to avoid scorching – mixture will begin to thicken. To check consistency do a cold water test. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla and baking soda for 1 minute. Scoop out on parchment paper and let set for 5 minutes.
