There’s nothing quite like finding that perfect bra. You know, the one that fits just right – not too tight, not too loose, and the straps actually stay up. The perfect bra is hard to find, but it’s important for more than just your comfort.
The feel of the bra aside, did you know that wearing the wrong bra size can affect your health? According
to The British School of Osteopathy, wearing a poorly-fitting bra can
cause headaches and neck pain. Their research found that many women wear bras with a band size that is too large and cup size that is too small. In these cases, the breasts are supported by the shoulder straps, which will cause a lot of unnecessary pressure on the shoulders. With a bra that fits correctly, the breasts are supported from underneath and not from the shoulder straps.
Not only do bras that fit well alleviate pain, but they can also make your clothes fit better. “We have a
lot of women come into our store complaining of ‘back fluff’ as we call it,” says Melissa Logos, owner of Foundations Professional Bra Fitting. “Finding the right bra can actually make your clothes fit better and make you look slimmer.”
The first step to finding the right bra is getting professionally fitted, which is a specialty at Foundations. Once measurements are taken, Logos and
her team give a few size suggestions to try on. “The tricky thing is that
size is relative,” says Logos. “Sizes can be different from brand to brand, which is why it’s so important to try on neighboring sizes. Just because you wear a 34C in one brand doesn’t mean that will be your size in all brands.”
Foundations carries over 200 sizes from AA to K. Their store is filled with bras of every shape, size and color, which is how they are able to find everyone’s “perfect bra.” “When we evaluate someone’s bra size, we also take into consideration their breast tissue,” Logos said. “Different tissue densities call for different bra styles. All of these factors play a role in getting the best possible fit with the most support.”
