BREAKFAST ON THE BAY
story by Jeff Clark photos by Mockingbird Cafe, The Buttercup on Second Street, Lulu’s on Main, Sunrise Cafe and Grammy’s Donuts & More
Bay St. Louis has made a name for itself for its Old Town district and
its dedication to the arts, as well as for hosting fabulous events such as Frida Fest and Dolly Should Fest, both of which fall under the Second Saturday umbrella. It’s the home of St. Stanislaus College, the Bay Ratz Marching Battery, ‘Sippiana Soul and a thriving nightlife in the bars on stilts along the Bay.
But “The Bay,” as it is known by those in the know, is also home to some of the finest breakfast spots in South Mississippi, many of which are located within walking distance of one another. And who doesn’t love a good breakfast? While some say it’s the most important meal of the day, it’s certainly one of the tastiest meals of the day. It’s such a great meal that it is sometimes eaten at lunch under the moniker “brunch” and even at

And if that’s not enough, eating at Mockingbird for breakfast gets you one step closer to getting one of the coveted lemon feta cookies, which usually sell out quickly.
The Buttercup on Second Street is just a short walk from Mockingbird Cafe. It serves pancakes and
scrambles, but people keep coming back for the crawfish omelet. It’s a fluffy omelet filled with crawfish étouffée and cheese. Or, you could try the omelet filled with Gulf shrimp, peppers, onions and cheese.
Also in the Bay’s downtown area
is Lulu’s on Main, which offers a “brunchfast” on Sundays. If you’re wanting some traditional creole brunch options, try the shrimp and grits or grillades and grits at Lulu’s. Or, check out the Pain Perdu with chicken tenders, which is the Lulu’s equivalent of chicken and waffles. Plus, locals swear they have the best drip coffee in town.
Sunrise Café is a short drive from Old Town. Breakfast is a serious business at Sunrise where it is served all day, or at least until it closes at 1 p.m. While Sunrise offers many options, the Ultimate Philly
