The fifth Annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure will take place on September 8 at Jones Park in Gulfport. Registration for the event opens at 7 a.m. in conjunction with a Survivor Breakfast from 7 to 8 a.m. The 5k walk will begin at 8 a.m. with awards and group photos to follow at 9:30.
The Susan G. Komen non-profit organization uses events such as Race for the Cure to raise funds that provide free mammograms, assistance with medication and out-of- pocket treatment costs, awareness programs and support services, including assistance with wigs and lymphedema sleeves, for women on the Coast.
“Participating in this event will allow us to raise the necessary funds to provide these services again this
year,” said Memphis-Mid South Mississippi Senior Vice President Catherine Young. “Without access to preventive screening programs, many women will not seek care until it is too late and much harder to treat. We are the only breast cancer organization providing real time support and assistance to women who are at risk of developing breast cancer and those who are diagnosed.”
In the past four years, the organization has raised over $130,000. This year they have raised $29,000 and hope to reach a goal of $100,000 through this event.

After a three year hiatus, the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art is resurrecting its George Ohr Arts Festival. The new festival will incorporate two new additions: craft beer and a camper rally. The event will take place on the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum grounds on October 6 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Aptly named the George E. Ohr Art & Beer Festival, the event will offer a variety of arts and crafts vendors, craft beer tents, a homebrewers’ competition, camper rally featuring vintage campers, skoolies and camper vans, a community car art restoration project, live music, food vendors, and a ceramics-based performance by the Mad Potter of Bay St. Louis, Steve Barney.
“The festival will fall during Cruisin’ the Coast, one of the largest tourism attractions to the Mississippi Gulf Coast,” said Ohr-O’Keefe spokesperson Natalea Thomson. “Based on the attendance of Cruisin’, the museum is anticipating more than 2,000 festival attendees.”
Festival admission is free, but access to beer tents will require the purchase of a $25 general admission armband. A limited number of VIP
armbands will also be available for $50.
