Maturing skin
comes with new
concerns. Rather
than the oily skin
you might have
experienced in your
20s, fine lines, dryness
and pigmentation might
become concerns once you reach your 50s. Just like our skin and hair changes over time, we should also alter the products we use to address these changes.
Luckily, many companies are making the product transition easy by adding in good-for-you ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, a moisture-binding ingredient that helps keep skin looking and feeling hydrated. Sometimes, hyaluronic acid is even present in makeup products, such as Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Tint and Smashbox Photo Finish Radiance Primer.
“Hydration from the inside out is one of the most important things to remember,” said Ann Marie Walley, owner of Antonian Salon in Gulfport. “You would be amazed what drinking
the adequate amount of water a day
will do to one’s skin!”
Creasing and fine lines are natural and a part of life, but Walley says there are ways to adapt
our makeup routines accordingly. “Knowing how to diminish them by using lighter concealers, such as a water based product, and not using shimmers over areas of aging skin can make all the difference,” she says. “A light, natural finish no matter your age and skin type is always flattering.”
As for hair, using products free of parabens and sulfates will help to keep your hair happy and healthy. Try a natural shampoo like those made
by Love Beauty and Planet. While parabens and sulfates help remove dirt and dead skin cells from your scalp, they can also strip your hair
of its natural oils, making it dry and brittle. If your scalp is sensitive, these ingredients can also cause irritation such as redness, dryness, and itching.
