gives an opportunity to accessorize accordingly. Don’t get carried away though; this look should still be reserved to keep it from leaning too far towards cocktail dress. For any event that requires business dress, whether casual or formal, opt for a modest look and avoid strapless or spaghetti strap outfits.
Cocktail is where things get more exciting as there’s
a good bit of wiggle room to add some personal flair. That’s why you’ll often see it on invitations for holiday parties, weddings, receptions and other celebrations. Shorter, party-ready dresses are a great choice, or even dressy separates.
“Cocktail attire merits a touch of something special,” said Sharon Weeks, manager at Grant’s for Her.
“That could be a unique color, textured fabric or an
embellished detail.”
Semi-Formal dress is tricky because it’s basically just
a bit below formal attire. Women can go with a little black cocktail dress or a long dressy skirt with a nice top. Dress shoes are expected, but they can be fun and have some bling. Speaking of which, this is a great time to break out those sparkly earrings that aren’t very realistic to wear everyday.
On this list, we’ve made it to formal attire, the mecca of all dress codes. When it comes to formalwear, the basic rule is to wear a floor-length gown. Formal attire also falls into the categories of black tie and white tie, but for women, the only real distinction is that long gloves are optional with a white tie look.
