The po-boy is an icon in this part of
the world, even if it was invented in New Orleans, the Mississippi Gulf Coast has made this venerable sandwich its own. Aficionados search far and wide for what almost always turns out to be an unexpected or slightly out-of- the-way po-boy heaven, and Fayard’s on Popps Ferry Road is exactly that. It’s a service station, but a service station that serves up some of the best po-boys to be found.
Fayard’s is also a convenience
store, but the café is where the magic happens. People from far and wide have been making this place a regular stop for years. The menu isn’t huge, but it
is packed with great food that is made with a passion for getting it right and attention to detail that is the hallmark of all great cooks and chefs.
At the top of the po-boy list, and there are more than a dozen to choose from, is the hot roast beef and gravy po-boy. Served on house made po-boy bread, loaded with roast beef and dripping with gravy, this po-boy is going to set you back just $5.50. Make sure to load up on napkins, because you are going to need them. There is another variety of roast beef po-boy that is called the country roast that is just as good, but made a bit differently. My advice is to try them both.
