SPORTS & OUTDOORS explore the great outdoors HIKING
On the Mississippi Gulf Coast story by
Kelsey Sunderman
When most people consider the beauty of the Gulf Coast, they immediately call to mind images
of sandy beaches and winding coastal waterways. However, these waterways aren’t the only trails available for exploring. The greenways are arguably some of nature’s greenest and wind through a variety of scenery, such as parks, forests and even the beachfront.
One of the best ways to experience some of the Coast’s best hiking
is through the Mississippi Costal Heritage Trail (MCHT). The heritage trail is the signature project of the Gulf Coast Heritage Trails Partnership,
and aims to connect the Coast from border to border. This 101-mile long trail begins at Infinity Science Center in Hancock County and ends at
the Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Jackson County.
The trail offers hikers the opportunity to explore the area while leading
them along a path to some of the most notable historic, scenic, educational and entertaining locations. The MCHT prides itself on providing a safe and secure route that features well-lit and consistently maintained trails. The
trail also includes a variety of comfort stations and playgrounds along the way.
Beginners should consider the necessary gear to enjoy a day on the trails. As with most sports, hiking has its own checklist of appropriate attire. Starting feet-first, be sure to wear shoes with a lot of support and good grip for treading across slippery surfaces. If you do not own hiking boots, sneakers will do the trick. Socks are another important part of hiking gear, as they help keep feet cool, dry, and comfortable throughout the day.
Be sure to wear clothes that reflect your environment. If it’s hot outside, look for something more lightweight. For cooler weather, opt for pants and a jacket. Regardless of the weather, a hat and sunglasses are always a good idea. Sun protection while hiking is incredibly important so be sure to pack sun gear and sun screen.
