WHITE CAP
story and photos by Julian Brunt
Before the Coast was dotted with raised beach front establishments that are hybrid bars and restaurants, there was a standard seafood restaurant profile. You remember them, don’t
you? They always had a view of the beach, sometimes north of Highway 90, sometimes right on the beach. There
was a bar, but it was a local hangout, and the menu was pretty predictable. The fried seafood platter was always the best seller.
If you are reminiscing about those days and feeling nostalgic, the cure lies in jumping in the family car and making your way to Gulfport and the White
Cap Seafood Restaurant. It started in 1929 as a snack bar, then moved and became the White Cap Drive Inn, but Hurricane Camille ruined that much loved spot. Just a year or so later Carl, Buck, and Ray Lizana reopened in the Gulfport Harbor and called the new place the White Cap Restaurant. The story repeated itself when Hurricane Katrina reduced the restaurant, and much of Gulfport to a slab, but the Lizanas are nothing but resilient and in a few years the latest version of this popular seafood spot reopened.
You shouldn’t be surprised to learn that a restaurant that has been as
ABOVE: SEAFOOD platter RIGHT: SHRIMP salad
