by on a Monday. It was lucky for me because I am a fried chicken fanatic, and the buffet was loaded with this true Southern specialty. There was homemade cornbread, crispy cabbage, turkey necks (don’t forget extra napkins), delicious fried sausage, and rice and gravy. I loaded a plate with fried chicken, red beans and rice and some of the best mac and cheese (award winning in fact) I’ve had in a long time, and another side of cream corn.
Let’s start with the mac and cheese: this is the real deal, made from scratch, so that it’s cheesy and creamy, with that essential cheese crust on the top. How could it be better? I’ve also got to say I haven’t had homemade cream corn in ages, and the chewy corn will assure you that what Ms. Audrey serves is fresh cut. The red beans were slow cooked and full of big chunks of pork. When you add a big spoonful of rice, you know why this
dish has been a Monday essential in the South for ages. I’ve got to stay away from the sweet desserts, but the homemade sweet potato pie sure was tempting.
There’s not much fancy in Ms. Audrey’s, no fusion anything, no exotic pairings, but what you will find here is Soul Food made with love and passion, and friendly people happy to serve it to you.
