If you have a Southern bone in your body, then at times the desire for Soul Food — the true cuisine of the South
— will take hold and just not let go. Nothing so deeply satisfies like the food the poor folks of this region developed, most of it cast-offs to which the rich turned up their noses. Corn bread, greens, pork ribs, ham hocks, peas and beans of many sorts all fall into this category.
So, when the desire hits, what’s a poor soul to do? The answer is pretty simple, head to Ms. Audrey’s in Gulfport. It is centrally located, just a block or so off Highway 90, behind the big Bancorp South building. This is where Café climb used to be and there is plenty of parking.
Ms. Audrey has been cooking in Gulfport for about a year, although this is a relatively new location. But how good is the food? I asked a customer who walked in just as I did, and he replied, “I eat here two times a day, every day.” That is a pretty solid endorsement. Next, I asked my server what were the best sellers, and she replied in the same vein, “everything!”
Most people go straight for the buffet, but there is a menu that lists breakfast specials (I can’t wait to come back and try the chicken and waffles), a handful of sandwiches and a few salads. But take my advice, unless you are just in the mood for a serious cheeseburger, go for the buffet.
