experience tales of pirates, military battles and the region’s seafaring legacy. The Round Island Lighthouse is located within Lighthouse Park at 3621 Frederic Street. Operating hours are Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Scranton Museum is located at River Park, 4100 Clark Street. Visitors can explore a 70-foot shrimp boat, fully equipped with shrimp nets, a Turtle Excluder Device (TED), a wheelhouse, galley, bunk room, wetlands diorama, and three 100-gallon aquariums. Operating hours are Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Scranton Nature Center is another important part of telling the area’s story and is located at I.G. Levy Park, 3928 Nathan Hale Avenue. Home to live snakes, rabbits, fish, peacocks, an owl and ducks, the center provides visitors the opportunity to learn all about the wild critters that inhabit the area. The center is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A Nature Discovery program for children is held every Saturday from 10:30 a.m. until noon.
Admission for all three museums is $2/adult and $1/child (2-12). Group rates are available. To schedule a tour, call 228.938.6612.
Law signs have been installed along major corridors to notify drivers and cyclists that they should share the road, cyclists should ride with the flow of traffic, and motorists should allow 3 feet when passing. Also, a Bicycle Advisory Committee was formed to further guide bike related development as well as work to enhance and promote biking in Pascagoula.
Another of the city’s treasures is Lighthouse Park, named after the Round Island Lighthouse. The Park is located
on the east bank of the Pascagoula River, the largest free flowing river in the lower 48 states, and offers two boat launches, a fishing pier with cleaning station, a pavilion,
a restroom, and parking. It is also home to the Singing River Mural, the Community Oak, the Round Island Lighthouse, and the Pascagoula River Environmental Trail which consists of a small river-themed playground, nature overlook, outdoor classroom, educational signage, water fountains, and bicycle parking.
An integral part of Pascagoula’s ecotourism is the cities’ three museums: the Round Island Lighthouse, the Scranton Museum and the Scranton Nature Center.
The historic lighthouse was built in 1859 and was a beacon for mariners for 150 years. Ravaged by hurricanes, remnants of Round Island Lighthouse were rescued and relocated to mainland Pascagoula in 2010. After an extensive restoration, it opened to the public in 2015. Visitors are invited to
