Robyn Tennyson, district manager for Kelly Services, believes in a quote from celebrated opera singer Marian Anderson, “Leadership should be born out of the understanding of the needs of those who would be affected by it.”
Tennyson has been with Kelly Services since 2006. Before joining Kelly Services, she owned and operated a successful therapeutic massage business in Grenada, Miss., for 10 years.
“Having previously owned a business, I am very conscious of customer needs and the importance of value,” she said. “Taking a little extra time to find the right fit for your business is imperative. It’s a very competitive business world and every decision counts.”
Marcus Glover, general manager of the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino, has been on the Coast one year
and in the hospitality industry 13 years. “I’ve had several people who were very influential in my career,” he said, “and the best advice I’ve received is to never be tolerant of unacceptable outcomes. That advice can carry across many industries and career paths. If you know something better exists, you should demand better.”
Glover shares words of advice with others. “One thing that’s helped
me survive is remembering that we choose the attitude we take each
and every day. Life is 10 percent what happens to you and 90 percent how you respond; how you respond guides your energy.”
He also recommends maintaining a sense of humility, staying grounded, and not forgetting where you came from and who you are. “In any business, integrity is paramount. It’s important that people trust you,” he added.
M2 Media President and South Mississippi Living Publisher Michael Sunderman reflects on 32 years
in the media business. “Whatever
success I’ve attained is because
I work hard, set goals and had
the good fortune of working for some of the best publishers in the business,” he says. “An important lesson I learned is that what I do affects every department and every employee.”
A second publishing mentor taught him that a sale isn’t a sale until the check clears the bank, and a third was always upbeat and made sure everyone around him knew he valued them and appreciated what they contributed to the business.
“My last publishing mentor was Charles H. Morris from Savannah, Ga. His company invested in Jackpot! magazine, a company Mary and I launched when we moved to Mississippi in 1994,” Sunderman said.
A few years later, Morris selected Sunderman to run his national newspaper company as the President & COO. “His business acumen was impressive, and he taught me not just how to manage his many businesses, but to identify, evaluate and purchase media,” Sunderman says of Morris.
