Summer Staycations, Family Style

The family summer vacation is a
sacred tradition. It is one of the year’s highlights and the soul of some of the best childhood memories. Plans are made for months, and a countdown begins until we can pack the suitcases and duffels
and head out. Work gets put on the back burner, the school year is in the rear-
view mirror, and everyone can let their hair down a little bit. We look forward
to seeing family and friends and having some fun. Parents can relax and forget the routine of work and responsibility for a few days while kids enjoy ditching some
of the rules that apply to every other week of the year. Vacation is a time when life seems a bit slower and easier.
July seems to be the sweet spot of the summer when we look to get away, if not for an extended period, at least for a long
weekend or two. Getting away sometimes means just getting away from the normal routine and vacationing right at home. When there’s just not enough time off or traveling isn’t in the cards, being home with family without the typical day-to-day obligations is just what we need. Here are some great ideas for a home staycation that will make fun memories to unpack next winter.
The backyard is a camping trip waiting to happen. It will be hot, it is South Mississippi after all, but families that sweat together, stick together so to speak. Pull out the tents or make one with some netting, rope, and a couple of trees. Pack the cooler with an evening picnic, build a small fire pit, and have s’more supplies handy. Check a star gazing book out of the library or use an app on your phone
to spend some time on your back, on a blanket, admiring the amazing sky show. Tell stories and make it a game to finish each other’s silly tales. Fall asleep full of sweet treats and magical stories, knowing that in the morning a cool shower and a fresh breakfast are just steps away.
If camping isn’t your vibe, maybe a
day at the backyard water park is. Some plastic sheeting, a garden hose, and a kiddie pool in the shade is an easy way
to cool your heels. Add some tunes, some fruity drinks, and tropical snacks and you are ready for Hawaii at home. For less than $100, a projector can be purchased for nightly backyard movies. Share the fun with friends and make it a block party.
Treat the family to a spa day. Pamper everyone with luxurious baths complete with lots of bubbles and relaxing aromas.
