The D’Iberville Police Department is located at 10274 3rd Ave., but it will soon have a new home in the D’Iberville Public Saftey Complex adjacent to the fire department. The department’s chief is Wayne Payne, first Police
Chief of D’Iberville (2007) and a 45-year veteran of law enforcement.
The D’Iberville/St. Martin Chamber Officer of the Year
is Chad Seymour, who is a part of the department’s retail crime unit. Payne said the unit, which is funded by a grant through the U.S. Department of Justice, was established to focus on retail crime.
“On November 21, 2018, Officer Seymour responded
to Walmart Supercenter due to a reported shoplifting incident,” Payne said. “Upon speaking with loss and prevention personnel, we learned that a suspect was detained after being observed selecting multiple items
of merchandise from the stores shelves and replacing the stores UPC labels with ones she brought into the store with her for a much lower value. The original price for
the merchandise was $164.84, but she was able to scan the items with the fraudulent UPC labels at the self-checkout register for a total of $29.00. Seymour was able to locate an additional 28 fraudulent UPC labels, 13 clear merchandise tag ties and clear tape, which are all used to replace valid UPC labels on merchandise. This prevented the individual from potentially defrauding other retail establishments within the city and costing our merchants thousands of

dollars.”
The department’s Crime Stoppers Officer of The Year is
Sgt. Leo DeGeorge. Payne said DeGeorge was recognized for his assistance with a reported shooting at Rudy Moran Park on Lamey Bridge Road in December 2018.
“Sgt. DeGeorge was the first officer to arrive on scene and observed the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to his left leg near his upper thigh,” Payne said. “He immediately assessed the scene for safety, determined the immediate threat diminished and quickly began to evaluate the first aid options for the victim. The victim was found to be bleeding severely from his leg wound. DeGeorge then applied a tourniquet above the wound
to slow the bleeding and stayed with him until medical personnel arrived. Due to Sgt. DeGeorge’ s immediate response to the scene and quickly assessing it, using
his experience and training, was able to provide critical lifesaving care to the victim which may have saved the victim’s life.”
Officer Corina McSwain was also recently recognized
as the Officer of the Month. “Corina McSwain observed
a tan colored SUV traveling east on Brodie Rd. matching the vehicle description connected with the burglary of a vehicle at Walmart on Sangani Blvd. where a firearm was stolen,” Payne said. “Her diligence and attention to detail lead to the arrest of the suspect in this case, and this is why she was named D’Iberville’s Officer of the Month.”
