FIRST RESPONDERS gratitude
TWAYS TOThank First Responders
story by Kelsey Sunderman-Foster
he first responders in our community are in harm’s way every day, often putting themselves on the
front lines of dangerous and potentially traumatic events. For the many police officers, firefighters and emergency medical professionals across the Coast, these occupations are more than a job, they’re a calling.
So how can we thank these brave men and women?
HERE ARE SOME IDEAS ON HOW TO SHOW YOUR GRATITUDE:
1) TAKE A FOOD GIFT
First responders often spend hours or even days at a time at their station awaiting calls. This means they’re on duty throughout mealtimes, which are especially important for them to keep up their energy and morale.
“The amount of doughnuts we get is amazing,” said Gulfport Police Department Sgt. Tony Alves. “We put them in the briefing room where they don’t just feed us but also show appreciation from the community.”
As calls can come in at any time, it’s often best to bring baked goods or meals that can easily be returned to later.
2) DONATE TO A GOOD CAUSE
The Coast is constantly raising funds to support community groups, first responders included. Be on the lookout for charity events and drives that you can participate in or donate to, such as the Law Enforcement Appreciation Fund and
Mississippi Firefighter’s Association events. A gift to one of these causes can make a real difference in the lives of first responders and their family members.
3) SEND A THANK YOU LETTER
Written letters may seem outdated what with email taking over, but sending a physical letter can go
a long way. Sending a kind note shows that you took the time to send your thanks in a more personal and permanent way. Gathering multiple letters from the community and delivering them all at once is a great way to make an impact.
4) DELIVER A GIFT BASKET
Gift Baskets are an excellent
way to tailor your gift to fit the recipients. You can fill the baskets with snack items or even gift cards to local restaurants or attractions to give the first responders a way to unwind between their high-stress assignments. The baskets can even be decorated in the colors of the
department you’re delivering them to!
5) WORD OF MOUTH
While it’s an indirect way to thank the police, fire and paramedic personnel, speaking well of these individuals is a genuine gesture
of gratitude,. When you have a good experience with local first responders, spreading the word either online or in person can do a great service to the department.
6) JUST SAY “THANKS”
A simple “thank you for your service” can be a great way to
show someone that you respect and appreciate what he or she is doing for the community. It seems simple, but could make a first responder’s day.
“Just a thank you face-to-face goes a long way with us,” said Biloxi Fire Captain Jim Davis. “We’re not asking for that or looking for it, but when you do it, it means a lot to us.”
