kitchen’s ability to nail every dish. I spent about an hour in the kitchen, and they were slammed, but there was consistency in every dish, and everything I saw looked killer good. As I always do, I asked the wait staff what the best sellers are (it’s a practice you might want to consider when visiting a new place), and I was bombarded with a litany of dishes, and there was almost perfect agreement.
Po-boys and gumbo were way up at
the top of the list, and the roast beef and shrimp po-boys I saw looked tantalizing. Everyone also agreed that using bread from New Orleans’ most famous bakery, Leidenheimer Baking Company, was a
big plus. Another unanimous choice was the fried green tomatoes, and there are
two options. You can get a smaller plate
as an appetizer, topped with crab and hollandaise sauce, or the stuffed version
as a main course. This entree is fortified with a shrimp and crab meat stuffing and a house made Chandelier sauce.
I am a huge fan of ordering several appetizers instead of one big entree and my choices at Steve’s would have to be the spinach and artichoke dip (really creamy), smoked tuna dip (it’s an old Coast favorite that is coming back into fashion) and an amazing plate piled high with crispy, delicious onion rings.
If you are really hungry — portions here are generous — check out the seafood au-gratin, which is jumbo lump crab and shrimp in a creamy rich cheese sauce and pasta. An all-time favorite that should always get serious consideration is the seafood platter, a pile of shrimp, oysters, and fresh fish, battered in corn flour, and fried just right. Another choice I’d think long and hard about is the fresh catch.
It’s fresh Gulf fish cooked almost any
way you like, and with a choice of great sauces as well. Be sure to consider the Cat Island sauce, a great combo of mushrooms, artichoke hearts, shrimp, and crab meat in a light lemon butter sauce.
This place has a lot to offer! When you are in the mood for a seafood place that has earned its marks, has a great view, and friendly service with a small town feel, Steve’s is the place for you.
