Want to improve your
health? Look no further
than the Gulf of Mexico.
Get your heart pumping with recreational activities like swimming, running on the sand, or beach volleyball. Or take in the scenery with a walk on the beach, paddle boarding, or kayaking. Even soaking up a little sunshine can improve your health by increasing your Vitamin D levels, which helps your body absorb calcium. Just make sure to limit your overall exposure and put on sunscreen or cover up before you start to burn.
Looking for more peace of mind? Several recent scientific studies have shown that being near the water and enjoying “blue spaces” such as our beautiful Gulf of Mexico, is good for your mental health. Research-backed
benefits of being around the water include lowered heart rate and blood pressure, increased feelings of relaxation, and increased creativity.
Some of the reasons scientists think our mental well- being might be improved by time near the water are
that the ocean gives us a sense of being connected to something bigger than ourselves; the sights and sounds
of water are soothing; and paying attention to the ever- changing movement of the water lets us focus on just one thing and that allows us to quiet our mind. Seeing the water, hearing crashing waves, and smelling the salt air engages multiple senses and we might also be reminded of past beach trips that bring up positive memories.
You might even try an activity that can boost your physical and mental health, like practicing yoga near the water or going fishing. Research has shown that fishing reduces stress and can increase your patience and focus. Plus, you can turn your catch into a healthy dinner!
