Did you know that a healthy diet keeps your mouth healthy too? Eating a well-balanced diet can help you to avoid heart disease and type II diabetes and oral diseases like dental cavities. To keep your teeth and gums healthy, they need protein and minerals such as calcium and phosphorus. When you eat a healthy diet, you will get these kinds of important nutrients.
How do you lower your risk for dental cavities? The American Dental Association recommends the following :
• Avoid sugary drinks such as energy drinks, soft drinks, and juices that are “100 percent juice” as they are very high in sugar. Drink lots of water and unsweetened teas.
• Switch in between meal snacks from cookies, chips, candy and sugary foods to apples, almonds, carrots and other fruits and veggies.
• If you choose to have sugary drinks and food, have them with meals. Saliva increases when you eat, which helps to weaken acid and rinse bits of food off of teeth.
• Chew sugarless gum that has the ADA Seal of Acceptance. Chewing gum after meals also increases saliva and this can help reduce cavities!
Visit your family dentist for regular check-ups to help prevent cavities and remember that without good oral health you are not healthy!
