Dr. Carmen Walters
NAMED 14TH PRESIDENT OF
Dr. Carmen Walters
Dr. Carmen Walters has been announced as the newest leader of Tougaloo College. She will become the school’s 14th president, and the second woman to serve in the position.
Prior to her appointment, Walters worked as an executive vice president of enrollment, student success, and institutional relations at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College for
the past six years. Walters says that becoming president of the 150-year-old private historically African American college is a dream come true.
“Tougaloo has such a rich and powerful history. You can feel it when
you arrive on the campus and walk these hallowed grounds. It’s a great challenge and opportunity for me to help preserve that wonderful history but also carry Tougaloo forward so that it’s here another 150 years,” she said.
Walters has served in the community college space for over 24 years.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and business administration from Southern University, a master’s degree in postsecondary counseling from Xavier College and a Ph.D. in community college leadership from Mississippi State University.
