COASTNOTES
Uniting Volunteers
story by Kelsey Sunderman-Foster
The Gulf Coast Community Foundation (GCCF) has partnered with the Mississippi Commission for Volunteer Service to establish the Gulf Coast Hub for Volunteers and Nonprofits, joining a network of community foundations across the state that are working to provide volunteer and nonprofit services to communities in Mississippi.
The Gulf Coast Hub will be providing services to volunteers and nonprofits in Hancock, Harrison, Jackson, Pearl River, Stone and George County. Hubs are the places where volunteers can go to get involved in their communities and nonprofits can find the people, know-how, and resources they need to create positive change.
“The Community Foundation is pleased to partner
with Volunteer Mississippi to support local nonprofits
by establishing a regional HUB to assist with recruiting volunteers, organizational training and disaster preparedness,” said Rodger Wilder, GCCF President. “It is our hope that non-profits across South Mississippi will take advantage of these services and that the non-profit sector on the Coast will be strengthened as a result.”
In addition to recruiting valuable volunteers, the Gulf Coast Hub will rally the community around important volunteer initiatives – including disaster response efforts. It will also offer training and technical assistance to strengthen nonprofits, boards of directors, and volunteer programs.

CHANDELEUR ISLAND BREWING COMPANY AND MISSISSIPPI AQUARIUM JOIN FORCES
story by Mississippi Aquarium
Mississippi Aquarium and Chandeleur Island Brewing Company have joined forces to celebrate Endangered Species Day and promote Shark Conservation in the Gulf of Mexico and the world’s oceans.
Chandeleur Island Brewing Company introduced the Oceanic White Tip Wit to the Mississippi Gulf Coast and surrounding markets last month. The Belgian wit is the first in a series of limited-edition conservation beers that will support and promote the conservation efforts of the Aquarium.
There are over 13,000 sharks and ray around the world and many of them are threatened with extinction. The oceanic whitetip was selected as a representative for a signature species, the whitetip reef shark that will be
at Mississippi Aquarium. The oceanic whitetip shark is a vulnerable species with its numbers declining drastically. Proceeds from the Oceanic White Tip Wit and the conservation craft beer series will directly support conservation efforts in our region and around the world.
Oceanic White Tip Wit is a Belgian wit beer brewed with pilsner malt and unmalted white wheat lending
notes of bread dough and a soft and creamy mouthfeel. The expressive Belgian yeast provides spicy notes of clove and vanilla while the addition of key lime juice lends a tart and refreshing finish.
