FROM THE editor’s desk
Together apart. It’s something I’ve been seeing a lot lately, and a sentiment I prefer to social distancing. Just a few months ago, the idea of social distancing wasn’t even on our radar, and now it’s become the new normal. But what social distancing really means is physical distancing, staying home when we can and remaining six feet apart when we can’t.
Language is a powerful thing, one with many intricacies and nuances. When it comes to social distancing, I think the Coast has read between the lines: just because we can’t physically be together doesn’t mean we can’t be united as one. We are truly together apart, doing what we can from a distance to support one another.
I’ve seen ordinary people become heroes, picking up a needle and thread to make masks for our frontline employees and healthcare workers who desperately need them. Healthcare staff, from the housekeepers who keep the environment clean to the doctors and nurses who treat our friends and loved ones, have put themselves at risk each and every day to make sure that we are taken care of. Businesses that are struggling to survive this crisis have offered discounted pricing and donated to those less fortunate because they know that the people are struggling too.
When we look back years from now, what we will see is love. These heartfelt, unselfish actions are what will stand the test
of time – they are what define us. There are so many stories
to tell, and we know we’ve only skimmed the surface, but we dedicate this issue to those in the community who have risen to the occasion and given us all hope for brighter days ahead. We will get through this – together apart.
