COASTBEACHES
Offer free fun for all
story by Lynn Lofton photo by Teddy Lewis
Coast beaches are popular spots for residents and visitors. They’re fun, free and available to the public every day. In some areas beach vendors have rentals such as umbrellas, big-wheel water tricycles and personal watercraft. All three counties have sand beaches with Harrison County boasting the world’s longest man-made beach with 26 miles that meander along the Mississippi Sound.
Visitor surveys reveal the beach as the top tourism draw
on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. It’s an attraction that can be enjoyed by all ages. Whether you want to sit and watch the water or be more active, the beach o ers a variety of activities and pursuits.
Most beach visitors are content to laze in the sun, be beachcombers, build sand castles or splash in the water. The beach is a good place to y kites and for kite sur ng in the shallow water. Picnics are permitted but no glass containers are allowed on the beach. Concrete walks atop the seawall were built after Hurricane Katrina, providing a smooth surface for cyclists, walkers and joggers. The addition of re pits has made bon res safe and easy (permit required).
Nowhere are sunrises and sunsets more beautiful and inspiring than on the beaches of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The early morning glow of sunrise and the setting sun at the end of the day are quiet, peaceful times. And the best part is that watching nature’s show on the beach is free of charge.
