OF FOOTWEAR
Open or deep wounds need to be treated by a professional podiatric physician.
One way to also prevent the drying out
of the heels that tend to cause these
types of injuries is to use a daily lotion or moisturizer. A recommend brand would be Amlactin, or some form of a Urea-based cream or Eucerin cream.
This time of year, many adults and children tend to want to go barefoot. While this may be safe by the pool, it is not safe for everyday running around, especially if the adult or child is a diabetic. Be sure to be careful of stepping on a foreign object, such as glass, a splinter of wood, grass stickers, metal objects, etc. These types of things most certainly need to be treated by a professional. An easy solution to preventing these injuries is to just be sensible about when one may go barefoot.
Diabetic foot infections can cause serious injuries and complications. Diabetes affects
many things in the body including the feeling in your feet. There are times when a diabetic patient may not feel that they have stepped on a foreign object and do not realize it until there is swelling, redness, or drainage from the wound site. This can be treated with oral antibiotics and proper wound care from your podiatric physician. However, sometimes this can lead to hospitalization with intravenous antibiotics and staying overnight for a possible surgical procedure as well.
I personally grew up running on gravel roads in the country at my grandmother’s in the summer and was continuously stepping on random things and injuring my feet. Perhaps this may have led me to my profession as a foot doctor today?
Have a great time hunting Easter eggs this spring, or visiting Grandma and Grandpa, and always know that Foot Specialist of South Mississippi is here to get you back on your feet!
