the house made tzatziki sauce. Often, chefs are afraid of over seasoning and the final product tastes more of a yogurt or base cream than anything else. Chef Selene Puga, however, charges forth with bold flavors and the dill is pleasantly present.
The tzatziki also tops their Lamb Gyro, a signature dish and probably the most well- renowned in Mediterranean cuisine. Thick pita bread encircles fresh lettuce, tomato, onion and perhaps the most flavorful lamb on the Gulf Coast. Authentic spicing, breaking with the traditions of thin
lamb slices for traditional gyros, allows for a more full bite and flavor burst,
tied together once more with the house made tzatziki. There is a brilliance in its simplicity – it is an incredibly smart dish that should serve as a gateway into more complex flavorings.
Sophi’s remains completely pork free, opting to follow with the tradition of Eastern culture. Many of their offerings are or can be made into vegetarian or vegan friendly options. Their Veggie Rice Bowl is one such option. Yellow spiced rice, made with house made broth, is surrounded by a spicy sweet medley of grilled mushrooms, broccoli, cauliflower, squash, zucchini, sweet peppers, carrots and onions. As
a stand alone, the vegetables hold a cinnamon paprika bite, but when combined with the accompanying tahini garlic
mayo, the flavors burst forth in each bite, highlighting once again the importance of a simple yet beautifully flavored sauce.
It is the small attention to detail on even the most classic of dishes that sets Sophi’s apart. General Manager Brandi Dixon
gave us a knowledgeable tour of the market as well, showcasing hookah flavorings to match your drink order and food offering. Grape leaves and tahini spice mixes can be found there as well, bringing the true taste of the culture to the Gulf Coast.
