Maybe Lucas Walker is on his way to becoming a Renaissance man because of his diverse interests. At Gulfport High School he has a
4.0 grade point average and is a member of
the National Honor Society; AP calculus is his favorite subject; he’s an accomplished violinist; and he lists lawn maintenance as one of his activities. Plus, he adds, “People might be surprised to know that apart from all the nerdy things I do, I enjoy weightlifting too.”
The 17-year-old son of Beverly and Kenny Hudson, Lucas has been concertmaster of both the Gulfport High School Strings Orchestra and the Gulf Coast Youth Symphony Orchestra for four years.
“Being in the High School Strings Orchestra has meant the most to me, as I have been able to meet teachers and students who have been integral in making me who I am today,” he says. “Calculus is my favorite subject because it caters to how my mind works.”
Lucas has been a violinist for more than eight years and has played for weddings, restaurant venues, ceremonies, and other gatherings.
Among his skills he lists violin performance, typing pro ciency, higher math, speaking and writing pro ciency and being physically capable.
His plans after high school are to earn a degree at Mississippi State University in mechanical engineering and work in Mississippi. “I want to use math to solve real world problems for a living,” he said.
His favorite book is Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and his favorite movie is Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.
