Pass Christian just might be the
most picturesque small town in South Mississippi. Its population may be something less than 5,000, but Scenic Drive, that parallels Highway 90, is bejeweled with lovely homes, and Live oaks like no place else. Take a slow drive on this beautiful byway, but make sure to turn north when you get to Davis Avenue.
Here you’ll find a handful of interesting shops, so it’s a great place to park and walk around, but there is one brand new place you have just got to visit. Hotel Whiskey is the first new hotel in The Pass (what the locals call this lovely town) in 99 years! It’s a boutique hotel, with just 11 rooms, but for most folks, what is really going to get their attention is the restaurant on the first floor, Whiskey Prime.
There is only one way to describe this small restaurant: it’s just classy. Wooden
floors, varnished wooden tables, and some pretty striking chairs that provide a needed contrast to the otherwise subdued decor. If you are looking for a romantic getaway, you have found it.
The menu is petit as well, but you
have got to hand it to a place that does something and does it very well. It’s the first time I have seen a menu that offers more appetizers than entrees, but I found that prospect thrilling. It’s a bold move, to be sure, but it underlies a confidence in what this place is all about, and that is USDA certified prime Angus beef.
But let’s start at the beginning. There
is a good wine list, so if you want to order a few of the six starters and a
glass of wine, I can think of no better introduction to what Executive Chef
T.J. Wilson is about to lay on you. I’d recommend the crab cakes, served with a lemon horseradish mayo, and the grilled lamb lolly pops (chops) with a reduced
