A pril 17-19, Habitat for Humanity of the Mississippi Gulf Coast is empowering women to improve their communities
through financial and volunteer engagement by participating in Women Build 2018.
One home will be built in Harrison County and one
in Jackson County. Thirty women leaders from both counties will champion the effort to raise the funds needed to build these two homes through the financial and volunteer support of their local communities and corporate business partners.
Habitat provides each volunteer with an online page to assist their team in reaching their fundraising goal of $2,500. Many local businesses will be asked to invest in this year’s Women Build, making it possible to buy the materials needed to build the homes.
Nationwide, more than 17,000 women are expected to volunteer at Habitat construction sites. All will share the goal to help create a world where everyone has a decent and affordable place to call home.
“Habitat does more than build homes...they show you how to use life lessons to build a better future,” says Harrison County Community Team Chair Cindy Lamb.
Jackson County Leadership Chair Brenda Simkins states, “Habitat impacts so many more than just the family that calls our house a home. A home provides stability for parents and children in their neighborhoods and schools.”
Paddlewheel boat

P
repare to step aboard a new Coast attraction: the Betsy Ann Riverboat, one of America’s last remaining true stern wheel paddleboats.
“When you see the Betsy Ann, you cannot help but look at her and wonder how she handles and what she looks like on the inside,” said Captain Michael White. “Once you climb aboard, it just brings you back to the late 1800s and takes you to another place.”
The Betsy Ann offers four different cruises including a historical and ecological tour, a sunset cruise, a dinner cruise and private charters. The boat has a climate controlled lower main cabin to keep guests warm or cool and out of the elements, as well as an open air, covered hurricane deck perfect for enjoying the coastal breeze.
“We have seating for 60 guests downstairs and seating for an additional 50 upstairs,” White said. “The Betsy Ann also has a bar downstairs that serves cold water, soft drinks and beer. During certain trips we will offer dinner catered by local restaurants.”
