WALK
TO HELP
EXTRA
TABLE
story by Lynn Lofton An inaugural One Rotary + One
Coast walk will be held on March 18 to raise awareness of hunger in the area. Participants will walk from each of the Highway 90 bridges to meet in Jones Park in Gulfport. Each walker pays $100 to participate and sponsors pay $500, all of which goes to Extra Table to provide healthy food to local food pantries. Check-in is at 5:30 a.m. each bridge and the 13-mile walk begins at 6 a.m.
Extra Table was founded by Hattiesburg restaurant owner and chef Robert St. John after he received a call from a mission pantry that
had completely exhausted their food inventory and desperately needed help to supply their clients. “To be completely honest, I was skeptical there was a need, and wondered if we had a hunger problem,” he recalls.
St. John found that despite government assistance programs, many senior citizens and working
poor have food insecurity. He began working with bulk supplier Sysco to provide healthy food to food pantries.
“Rotary Clubs on the Coast are joining hands to raise dollars to help our food pantries feed our hungry neighbors, “ Gulfport Rotary President Sandi Dulaney said.
