he Gulfport home of Lana and Dr. Bruce Saylor is full of charm and personality. And, not to be overlooked is the beautifully landscaped lawn that
receives lots of loving care from Lana, who’s a Master Gardener.
“Growing up here I remember that my grandmother had all the Southern flowers such as huge camellias and azaleas, and she would send me home with a bouquet of roses wrapped with a damp paper towel,” Saylor said. “Nowhere in the world can you have the assortment of trees, shrubs and flowers we can have here.”
She has carried on much of that gardening tradition by having such old fashioned shrubs as sweet olive and oleander on her lawn. There
are also unusual plants, including a pomegranate bush producing fruit.
If this gardener — a member of the Beach Garden Society — sticks a plant in the ground, it’s most likely going to grow. “I probably spend the equivalent of two days a week gardening,” she said. “Although our garden was planned for low maintenance, there’s always deadheading and pruning to do. But I also try to have a little color year round.”
