In the Sukiennik/Houck home in Ocean Springs, Kait doesn’t want to put her style in a box. “I like what makes me happy to see every day, and things that remind me of good times and great people,” she says. “I collect a lot of small art pieces and most of my furniture is old and none of it matches.”
She loves clean lines, but wants a cozy space. “I use plants wherever I can. Books are also important to me, especially cookbooks of all kinds, and I use those around the house to decorate too,” she said.
Kait notes that decorating on a budget takes patience. “But you don’t have to resort to cheap things. Buy that old chair you love that doesn’t have great fabric and have it recovered to what you want,” she suggests. “Antique stores and estate sales are great places to find well made furniture.
“Use as much color or as little color as you like, but do it with purpose. Buy local art and buy art on trips to remind you of fun memories. Figure out what’s important to you, and above all, you aren’t decorating for your neighbors, friends or family. You will ultimately spend more time in your space than anyone else, so decorate for yourself.”
