COAST NOTES
story by Je Clark photos courtesy of Ricky Matthews
Ricky Mathews is not coming out of retirement, well, at least not o cially. Mathews, the former publisher of the Sun Herald, The Times-Picayune and Mobile Press-Register, is going back to work, but his new gig has nothing to do with publishing newspapers. Instead, he’s donning a pair of headphones and hitting the airwaves and the social media stratosphere to do one of his favorite things in life – talk about the people of the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Mathews launched his new daily talk show Coast Vue on
the SuperTalk Mississippi network. Coast Vue airs at 9 a.m. weekdays on WOSM-FM 103.1. The show is also available as a podcast on all popular platforms as well as on Facebook on the SuperTalk MS Gulf Coast page and YouTube.
“I was approached about doing this by some producers
at SuperTalk and, to be honest, I didn’t know if it was something that I wanted to do,” Mathews said. “Well, they kept reaching out and I put a lot of thought into what a radio show for me would look like – I put it all down on paper. I truly think the Coast is the best area in the state and there are so many interesting and successful people here, and I would love to have them tell their stories, so I decided to give it a try. But I knew that whatever I did, there had to be a Facebook element to it and a podcast element and a YouTube element.”
Coast Vue is a one-hour live program with one guest. The show launched with a Skype conversation with Haley Barbour, the former governor of Mississippi. Other guests scheduled for the show’s rst month on air include Bobby Mahoney, Rick Carter and Terry Green, Reed Guice, John Hairston and former Gulfport mayor George Schloegel.
“My guests are all highly successful people in whatever
they are doing and this show gives us a chance to create
a conversation about leadership and the Coast and its incredible attributes. I think people will learn lots of di erent angles from the conversations we’re having.”
