Southport Line may seem like
an unusual name for a place that specializes in po-boys, but if you know the history of the New Orleans po-boy, it makes perfect sense. The Southport Line was a street car company that went on strike. When a local restaurant felt sorry for the “poor boys” without work and gave them sandwiches made on French bread, the po-boy was born. Pretty cool, right?
Southport is a beautifully restored 1898 wooden frame Biloxi home (along with the addition of a beautiful porch), but you won’t find much old school other than decor. This place is about elevating the traditional po-boy to new heights, innovative food ideas, and amazingly friendly service. So, don’t be surprised if you see a daily special that features pork cheeks or Korean inspired
kimchee.
If you want to start small, there are
four options. For my money, I’d pick the pickle platter. All house-made, of course. You get pickles, pimento and cheese, an assortment of other pickled vegetables, along with a side of crostini. For another unusual dish, you might like the Poutine, a famous Canadian recipe that involves hand cut fries, house gravy, cheese curds, and house mustard. Yum!
If you come for a po-boy, you can certainly choose a fried shrimp or catfish version, or the ever-popular roast beef and gravy, but why not step out on thin ice for a change? Check
out the fried chicken po-boy tossed in wasabi buffalo sauce, Asian coleslaw, pickled ginger and cilantro mayo. See what I mean? Staying with chicken, the
