When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that’s amore. Amore, or simply love. A word used to describe our affections towards others, places, or things. But
to me, amore is the most perfect word
to describe one’s regard for food. It is beautiful and poetic, yet modest and sweet. Dean Martin’s iconic melodic dedication to love may have centered around a fondness of another, but I cannot help to think he would have felt the same way following
a meal at one of the best little Italian restaurants on the Coast: The Sicilian II.
A few months ago, I discovered the truly decadent and divine dining offered at The Sicilian II. My amore for the house lasagna was immediate, and a thus began a love affair between myself and this rich and decadent dish consisting of layers of pasta, fresh ricotta, and tangy meat sauce.
It seemed only necessary that I expand my palette and see what other delights were offered by this quaint local treasure.
Owner and Chef Chris Drake II grew
up watching his father prepare recipes passed down through several generations of domestic cooks. Well-kept family secrets make up a menu of delicious pastas, delectable sauces, and hearty meats, each infused with Drake’s Sicilian and Greek roots. The ingredients used in all of Drake’s dishes reflect the times in which these meals originated, when Drake’s great great great grandmother selected many of her ingredients based on availability. The results were simple yet satisfying meals where families could gather and break bread each day. Chef Drake projects this sense of togetherness in each dish which he prepares.
