While lots of quarterbacks have made MVP, it’s rare for a defensive player to be awarded this honor. They were also the only co-MVPs in Super Bowl history.
When we arrived south of Cat and started trolling, things looked troubling. Though the water was calm, there were no birds and no sign of bait. I was wondering if Capt. Ron was going to be able to pull this one off. I shouldn’t have doubted him.
In the distance, he spotted a school of dolphin and soon began marking fish. “Get ready,” he yelled from the bridge. Seconds later, one rod went off, then another, and then a third.
Randy grabbed a rod and quickly fought his fish to the boat, landing his first redfish, a 20- pound-plus beauty. David Crabtree, executive chef at Island View Casino, hauled in another, followed by my jack crevalle; not exactly what I wanted.
With lines back out, Capt. Ron headed for the school again and we were hooked up on four rods. Though I lost my fish when my snap swivel failed, David caught his second red with Brittany Wilem following close behind
with hers. Meanwhile, Randy’s fight continued.
Each time he gained a little line, the fish pulled drag
and ran. This fish wasn’t giving it up, even for a tough guy like Randy. I thought it might be a shark or a
foul-hooked red but when he finally fought it to the boat, it was another jack — half-again the size of
mine.
“It was an exciting day. I’ve caught a lot of big bass
but none fought as hard as those redfish and that jack crevalle,” Randy said.
