SPORTS & OUTDOORS red letter day
Former NFL star Randy White catches some Gulf Coast fun
story by Frank Wilem photos courtesy of Amanda Pittman
Catching big bull redfish is always fun. The
reds were still reported to be schooling as
we cleared the entrance to Gulfport Harbor aboard the Captain’s Lady with perfect
weather — clear and cool with no wind. Every fishing trip is special, but this one was made even
more so when our good friends at the Island View Casino arranged
to have Randy White, former Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle, join us after appearing at the casino.
Since Randy is an avid outdoorsman, I was surprised to hear him say, “I’ve fished a lot but never caught a redfish.” So, the challenge was on to find him one. I’ve fished with Capt. Ron Harmon before and while they call it fishing, not catching, for a reason, I would still bet on him every time.
We ran south to Cat Island channel with Randy relating stories about

his NFL days. I was living in Dallas when he began playing for the Cowboys and had the good fortune to watch him play.
Randy is tough. He played 209 games, missing only one due to a broken foot which didn’t
stop him from playing the rest of the season. That’s why he earned the nickname the “Manster” — half man and half monster. His
list of achievements includes election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame and scoring 62 in the top 100 list of all-time greatest NFL players!
One of his greatest honors was being named co- MVP (most valuable player) when the Cowboys won Super Bowl XXII. He
was named along with
Harvey Martin, a big deal for a couple of reasons.
