The Junior Auxiliary (JA) of Gulfport’s 73rd Charity Ball is set for November 11 at Richburg Hall. JA spokeswoman April Hoyt says this year’s theme is Down the Rabbit Hole from the book Alice in Wonderland.
“We usually have 500 people in attendance between our patron sponsors, guests, and members,” she said, “and we expect a good crowd this year for this fun event.”
Literature is distributed at the ball outlining the organization’s 12 service projects in the community. “The heart of Junior Auxiliary can be seen through what we do in our community service projects,” Hoyt said. “We have projects reaching out to children, youth and families in Gulfport, Long Beach and Pass Christian. Each year, our members put in hundreds of hours volunteering on the projects and giving our hearts to the children we serve.”
Those projects include ongoing work with the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center, Backpack Blessings, scholarships, mentoring, distributing hygiene kits, fulfilling clothing requests and providing Christmas cheer.

Fresh on the heels of celebrating their 10th anniversary, the members of the Gulf Coast Junior Golf League just leveled up for an 11th season.
Richard Schorr, a dedicated coach and an assistant golf professional at the Club at Diamondhead, said since the league’s inaugural year, making the sport fun for young golfers ages 5 to 15 took a front seat to the super technical nuances that comprise the sport.
“Last year we had a kid about six years old make a driver onto the green on a par three and he made a 20-foot birdie putt that was just awesome,” Schorr said. “He was excited, and we were excited. And it’s great seeing them improve while having fun and interacting with one another while also interacting with the coaches.”
The league was the brainchild of Joe Marlin, Chris Altese, and others. League teams are created based on each player’s skill level and the year is split into spring and fall seasons.
